Description of the Competition

New Competition Format

Starting from 2012 there will be a new format and level of quality for the „State President’s Prize in Athletics”. The main difference in comparison with the past 17 years lies in the fact that this will now be an international competition, and not only for teams from historical and cultural regions of Latvia (Vidzeme, Zemgale, Kurzeme and Latgale), as well as the teams from the capital city – Rīga. Competition will take place among teams from Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia. In each discipline a team will be represented by two participants, as well as those athletes who will have completed Olympic qualification. This format will promote a greater intrigue, since it will bring together the best athletes from Baltic countries, as well as this will mean a more interesting competition for the audience.

Best Athletes from National Teams

The aim of the competition is to bring together the best athletes from national teams in order to raise the level of this event, to achieve higher results, thus creating a greater intrigue around the Baltic society. Starting from this year organisers of the State President’s Prize in Athletics have planned various motivational aspects that will promote the best athletes to participate in the competition in Valmiera:
1) Opportunity to complete Olympic qualification for the London 2012 Summer Olympics;
2) Opportunity to complete European Championship qualification;
3) Opportunity to gain valuable money prizes for high quality results;
4) Opportunity to represent national team and to participate in a high-level competition.

International Expansion

The new format of the competition means rivalry between national teams from the Baltic countries and their best athletes. Thus, the best athletes from other countries are welcome as well. Athletics Federations from Russia and Belarus have shown interest to participate in this year’s competition. It is possible that in future the State President’s Prize could be won not only by the three Baltic countries, but Belarus national team as well.
