New Format for the State President’s Prize – Competition Among Three Baltic Countries

On April 24th 2012 a press conference of the State President’s Prize in Athletics was organised in Rīga Olympic centre. The new format of the competition was presented - competition among three Baltic countries, and not among teams from historical and cultural regions of Latvia.

The press conference was attended by Inesis Boķis (Head of the Valmiera City Municipality), Guntis Zālītis and Edvīns Krūms (representatives form the Latvian Athletic Association), and Jolanta Dukure (organizer of sports life in Vidzeme Olympic centre and a three-time winner of the State President’s Prize.

As usually, the competition will take place in Valmiera, in Jānis Daliņš stadium (this year on June 8 and June 9). Inesis Boķis, mayor of Valmiera, informed that the previous format of the competition was outdated and not intriguing enough. Therefore it was decided to expand the competition at the international level where national teams from Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia will compete in order to win the State President’s Prize. Guntis Zālītis, president of the Latvian Athletic Association, holds the view that the competition will be particularly interesting for the athletes since they will be able to meet Olympic and European Championship qualification norms. There will also be an opportunity for the athletes to gain valuable money prizes for high quality results, thus motivating the athletes to choose this competition over some commercial matches abroad. Edvīns Krūms, head coach of national teams of the Latvian Athletic Association, expects that the best Latvian athletes will participate in the competition because of its high level, as well as it will be an opportunity for the Baltic countries to compete among themselves.

The main emphasis of the competition will be on achieving high results. Thus money prizes mainly will be awarded for meeting norms A and B.

Zālītis also revealed that Athletics Federations from Russia and Belarus have shown interest about the competition and their athletes are planning to participate in the event, thus raising the level of the State President’s Prize. The aim of the new format of the competition is to raise sports level, as well as to attract the audience and to promote patriotism of inhabitants.
