Jeļena Prokopčuka and Several Foreign Athletes Will Participate in the State President’s Prize

On June 8 and June 9 the annual competition „State President’s Prize in Athletics” will take place in Valmiera, in Jānis Daliņš stadium. Long-distance runner Jeļena Prokopčuka has confirmed her participation in the competition. Also sprint team from Belarus and athletes from Russia, Ukraine and Uzbekistan will attend this event. Nijolė Medvedeva, General Secretary of Lithuanian Athletic Federation, informed us about participants of Lithuanian team and their expectations.

One of the most important Latvian Athletics competitions – the State President’s Prize in Athletics – is gradually coming closer. This year this will be an international event, since competition will be held among three Baltic countries. Also the best athletes from other countries are welcome to participate this year. Athletes from other countries will not compete over the main prize for total results of a country, but they will have an opportunity to compete over individual money prizes, as well as to try to meet Olympic and European Championship qualification norms.

Edvīns Krūms, head coach of Latvian national team, confirmed that the team has already been formed and practically all the current best athletes are included in the team. On of the most known athletes, who has confirmed her participation, is the long-distance runner Jeļena Prokopčuka. Jeļena has participated in three Olympic Games and in several European and World Championships. She also holds a number of Latvian records – in marathon, half marathon, 5000 m run, a.o. Complete composition of the national team will be announced at the end of May when other athletes will have approved their participation.

Foreign Athletes in the State President’s Prize:

As we have already informed, Athletics Federation from Belarus has shown great interest about the competition. At the moment Belarus has registered its team in 4x100 m relay with intention to show high results and to meet Olympic qualification norms. Other participants include national teams from Russia, Ukraine and Uzbekistan. Russia will be represented by a long jumper and a 100 m hurdles runner, Ukraine will be represented by a shot-putter, and Uzbekistan will be represented by a long jumper.

Lithuanian Athletic Federation about the Competition in Valmiera:

Nijolė Medvedeva, General Secretary of Lithuanian Athletic Federation, expressed her satisfaction about the opportunity for the Baltic countries to compete in a common competition. It is also an opportunity to show better results due to increased competition. The State President’s Prize in Valmiera will definitely be an amazing and intriguing sports event that will bring us positive emotions. There will be a great number of Lithuanian athletes participating in the competition in Valmiera. The most known athletes are: Rytis Sakalauskas and Lina Grinčikaitė (100 m), Eglė Balčiūnaitė (800 m), Darius Aučyna (long jump), Raivydas Stanys (high jump), Sonata Tamošaitytė (100 m hurdles). Complete list of participants will be known after Lithuanian Athletics Federation Cup on June 2 and June 3.

Lithuanian Athletics Federation expects its athletes to meet European Championship qualification norms in order to be able to go to Helsinki, Finland. But also meeting of Olypmic qualification norms will be important. The most promising athletes to complete this are Lina Grinčikaitė, Eglė Balčiūnaitė, Darius Aučyna, as well as relay teams.
