In 2013 „State President’s Prize in Athletics” will take place in Valmiera on July 19 and July 20. This year athletes will compete also for money prizes. Money awards will be granted to winners in each discipline, but the most valuable prize money in the amount of EUR 1500 will be awarded to the best individual performance in men and women competition.

Every year there are great individual performance results in the competition „State President’s Prize in Athletics”. Year 2012 was successful for the Olympic vice champion in javelin throw Vadims Vasiļevskis who achieved a great result of 86 m and 50 cm. Latvian runner Poļina Jeļizarova achieved new Latvian record in 3000 m steeplechase for women – she managed to beat this record by 18 seconds. By showing such great results both athletes managed to meet qualification norms for the London Olympic Games.
In order to promote competition and to attract the best athletes from Baltic states there have been valuable money awards prepared by organizers of the „State President’s Prize in Athletics” –Vidzeme Olympic Centre and Valmiera City Municipality. If athletes meet qualification norm A or B of the Olympic Games, they will receive prize money in the amount of EUR 500 – 1500. In top four disciplines (100m run, 110m and 100m steeplechase, long jump, javelin throw) an athlete will receive EUR 1500 if they show best individual performance with norm A, or EUR 1000 for best individual performance with norm B. In other disciplines prize money will be EUR 1000 for top result with norm A, and EUR 750 for top result with norm B.

According to competition format, there will be competition among national teams from three Baltic countries for State President’s Prize in team overall standings. In each discipline two athletes from a national team will compete by collecting points for the team overall standings. However, competition regulations state that more than two athletes, as well as athletes from other countries can participate in a single discipline. Yet these athletes will not participate in the competition among Baltic national teams – they will compete for individual money awards that will be granted for showing best individual performance in respective disciplines. Last year “State President’s Prize in Athletics” welcomed athletes from Kenya, South Africa, Paraguay, Russia and Georgia.

Organizers of the competition are Valmiera City Municipality, Vidzeme Olympic Centre and the Latvian Athletic Association. All the information about the competition “State President’s Prize in Athletics” can be found on the official website: State President’s Prize in Athletics
