„The State President’s Prize in Athletics” in Valmiera – Successfully Ended

During the past weekend in Valmiera the competition „State President’s Prize in Athletics” was successfully held in good weather conditions. This year’s competition had a new format, high level of organization and high performance results that enabled a number of athletes to meet qualification norms for being able to participate in European championships and London Olympic Games.

Traditionally „State President’s Prize in Athletics” has become one of the main athletic competitions in Latvia. This year was not exceptional, though the competition had a new format – it was expanded at the international level and athletes from the Baltic countries competed in order to win the State President’s Prize. Apart from Latvian, Lithuanian and Estonian athletes there were competitors from six other countries, including Republic of South Africa, Kenya and Paraguay.

During two days of the competition more than 300 athletes competed in 40 disciplines. 19 records of the State President’s Prize were set. Best individual performance in 3000 m steeplechase for women for Latvian athlete Poļina Jeļizarova, thus she managed to set new Latvian record and meet qualification norm A of London Olympic Games. Best individual performance in javelin throw for men was achieved by Vadims Vasilevskis with a great result of 86 m and 50 cm, thus setting a new record of the State President’s Prize. Significant results were shown also by Latvian athletes Igors Sokolovs (hammer throw) and Elvijs Misāns (long jump). Another new record of the State President’s Prize was set by Lithuanian athlete Rytis Sakalauskas (100 m run for men – 10.15 seconds). In national ranking gold went to Latvian team, followed by Lithuanian team (silver) and Estonian team (bronze).

“State President’s Prize in Athletics” has become to be a qualitative competition in Latvia due to the high level of organization and great number of fans. During the competition there was a large screen placed in the stadium in order for the fans to have a better view on achievements of athletes. The competition was remarkable also for its broad cultural program and magnificent opening ceremony which was attended by several thousands of inhabitants of Valmiera and town visitors.
